Just say YES!
Want to be involved in the movement and your community but are unsure where to start? Don’t worry, so was I. The truth is all you have to do is start saying yes!
While the credit union movement can always use your advocacy, it’s also good to be involved in other areas as well. Find a non profit you have a passion for and just reach out and say you’d like to get involved and ask where you can help. Feel free to say what area you have the most interest in helping and I almost guarantee they will happily accept your offer to help!
Consider looking at leadership opportunities in your community. Many towns have a Leadership Institutes or citizen boards or commissions. Reach out to the city office and ask how to apply to be part of those opportunities. Some workplaces will even consider paying the leadership institute fee for you to participate, all you have to do is ask. All are great ways to meet city officials while working on your leadership skills and bettering your community as well.
While it is fun and rewarding to be involved, don’t forget to leave time for yourself, your family and friends. I’ve made the mistake of saying yes too often and have paid for it by not leaving myself a free night to recharge. Be sure to find things that are important to you and align with your personal values.
Lastly, a tidbit to keep in mind that I heard on the CU Insight podcast with Maria Martinez; If you can’t commit 100% to something, you have to say no.
Go out there an #getinvolved! You won't regret it!
